MC Chandigarh sensitizes bulk waste generators on new Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026
*Chandigarh, June 10:-* Reinforcing its commitment towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable city, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today organized a Special Sensitization Workshop for Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) under the chairmanship of Sh. Balbir Raj, Joint Commissioner, MC Chandigarh. The workshop was attended by Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, Medical Officer of Health, senior officials and representatives of various institutions, residential societies and commercial establishments across the city.
The participants were sensitized about the key provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which came into effect in April 2026. Detailed deliberations were held on scientific waste management practices, responsibilities of Bulk Waste Generators, source segregation and compliance requirements.
Special emphasis was laid on mandatory 4-way segregation of waste at source, including biodegradable, dry recyclable, domestic hazardous and sanitary waste. The participants were also guided on safe handling and disposal of domestic hazardous waste.
Addressing the gathering, the Joint Commissioner highlighted the crucial role of Bulk Waste Generators in strengthening Chandigarh’s waste management ecosystem and urged all stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with the Rules. Dr. Inderdeep Kaur stressed the importance of decentralized waste management and effective source segregation for environmental sustainability.
The participants were advised to complete their registration on the CPCB’s centralized portal and adopt best waste management practices. The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh also announced a series of awareness programmes with RWAs, market associations and commercial establishments to further promote scientific waste management and public participation across the city.
